By Harold K. "Hal" Brown

ISBN: 978-0-7442-7874-3

Published: 2019

It’s important to learn about the 1960s civil rights movement from people who lived it and led it. In San Diego, one person is Harold K. Brown. Mr. Brown has a long history as a volunteer civil rights and community activist. Being an activist was not fashionable or respected, and challenging racial discrimination and segregation meant activists were labeled as radicals, communists, militants, and troublemakers. Even so, he proudly led San Diego’s Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in many protest demonstrations.

A Dastardly Act: The Story of One Soldier's Experience in WWII - You Are Still Beautiful, America

By Ambrose Brodus, Jr.

Suggested retail: $29.99

ISBN: 978-0-7442-3494-7
194 pages
Published: 2018

They served their country with honor and courage, yet were treated with disrespect. This book recounts a somber moment in American military history. A Dastardly Act is the story of Ambrose Brodus, Jr.’s experience in the U.S. Army during World War II. He tells his story for two reasons: To provide his family with an account of his life during the time he served his country and to aid the Association of the 2,221 Negro Infantry Volunteers of WWII in their effort to describe an episode in U.S. military history known to very few and, due to its historical significance, ought to be told.
“I am compelled to think through some of those negative issues of the past, especially the time of our honorable very dishonorable discharge, a dastardly act indeed. I simply take a breath, exhale, and think about the manner in which we handled it all. And I am okay with that! I’d just like more people to know about these things. Yes, you are beautiful America, but you still have some ways to go.” - Ambrose Brodus, Jr.

Supporting Men of Color in the Community College: A Guidebook

Black Minds Matter: Realizing the Brilliance, Dignity, and Morality of Black Males in Education

J. Luke Wood

Suggested retail $22.49

ISBN: 978-0-7442-7494-3
198 pages
Published 2019

The comments presented in this book are based on lectures Dr. J. Luke Wood, Ph.D. gave during the Black Minds Matter course and during speeches that were associated with the class. The goal of this book is to convey social science research in a manner that is accessible to the people it is designed to reach. While this book is designed for educators of Black boys and men, the accessible tone is designed to ensure that the messages expressed are useful for non-educators - namely parents, community members, and advocates for Black males.

The data presented in this book is derived from a review of extant research as well as Dr. Wood's own research findings. In particular, highlighted findings are from three guidebooks that are currently being used in the field. These guidebooks include: Supporting Men of Color in the Community College (Wood & Harris III, 2017), Teaching Men of Color in the Community College (Wood, Harris III, & White, 2015), and Teaching Boys and Young Men of Color (Wood & Harris III, 2017).

Counter-narratives were contributed by 51 parents illuminating often untold stories. Dr. Wood offered his own narratives after each chapter, sharing experiences that directly relate to the chapter themes and content. Other people's narratives include people from marginalized groups sharing their lived experiences and some are from narratives contributed by parents to the Our Voices Project.

Follow Your Purpose: Career Direction for Students and Prospective Students

FOLLOW YOUR PURPOSE: CAREER DIRECTION FOR STUDENTS AND PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

By Tita Gray

Suggested retail $13.99

ISBN: 978-0-7442-1673-8
66 pages
Published 2018

The main premise of this book is to help you find your purpose before graduating and to encourage you to be intentional with your career journey. In addition, it’s to encourage and reignite in mature adults the dreams that are instilled in you. Many of us have a dream, hobby, or something we love that can tell us a lot about ourselves. For example, I have never considered myself a writer, but I’m in love with words. I love the meaning, I love the sound, I like how they can connect a story or add emphasis. Not surprising then that writing poetry and stories was always something that provided me with a lot of comfort and reflection. It was my source of self-awareness, self-actualization, and connection. The intent of this book is for you to pay more attention to YOU. It’s for you to view life and what you need from it more holistically. Time, knowledge, and purpose are precious and should not be wasted or taken for granted. They are the foundations of what shape a meaningful career. This book is to encourage you to think differently about how you approach career decision making. There is a distinct difference between building a career and having a job. When you land in an industry that you feel a strong connection with, you can see the vast opportunities ahead of you. You can see yourself as a senior officer or becoming an entrepreneur in that field. You can see yourself making a difference and possibly continuing your education to further your career trajectory. As a result of never giving up on my dream of being a professor, and having friends and colleagues who believed in me, I began the career I always longed for in education. That opportunity led to my appointment as an Assistant Dean, completing a doctorate degree, and writing a book to give back to others for everything that has been given to me.

“Good Call, Bad Call” Handbook: 101 Questions You'd Like to Ask the Umpire

“GOOD CALL, BAD CALL” HANDBOOK: 101 QUESTIONS YOU'D LIKE TO ASK THE UMPIRE

By Patrick M. Sullivan

Suggested retail $9.99

ISBN: 978-0-7442-2708-6
90 pages
Published 2018

You hear them saying: “GOOD CALL!” and “BAD CALL!”

Sometimes you even hear both at once! Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Whether it’s a rules interpretation or a judgment call, there are lots of times what happens on the field doesn’t make sense in the stands.

Baseball rules literacy (BRL) is poor even among fans, and worse among parents who are only at the ballpark because Johnny’s too young to drive. That’s because baseball rule books are BORING. The “Good Call, Bad Call” Handbook: 101 Questions You’d Like to Ask the Umpire is anything but.

Patrick Sullivan umpired at every level of amateur baseball, from T-ball to college, for over 40 years. He’s heard a lot of talk on, or from, the far side of the backstop. The “Good Call, Bad Call” Handbook is based on actual conversations with fans away from the ballpark, questions heard through the fence, and fans heard talking to each other who sound as wise as owls but whose actual BRL isn’t worth a hoot.

In the years since his first draft, every single baseball call that generated controversy in media or online is something you would have already known the right and wrong of…if you had read this book!

And yes: you will GET the Infield Fly Rule!

This guidebook is divided into four main parts. In Part 1: Foundations of Success for Men of Color, the theoretical perspectives undergirding a revised teaching and learning enterprise that prioritizes the success of men of color are discussed. Also explored are common barriers and challenges facing men of color that necessitate enhanced teaching practices. A key focus of these barriers is on environmental factors (external pressures that occur outside of college that influence student success in college) and on the socialization of men of color in education. Parts II and III articulate the promising practices derived from the comprehensive study of faculty. Specifically, Part II: Building Relationships with Men of Color discusses the establishment of personal relationships with men of color as a foundational precursor to efficacious teaching practices. In Part III: Promising Teaching Practices, the authors address the role of relevancy and interactivity (among other factors) in effectively communicating academic content to men of color. The guidebook concludes with Part IV: A Note to Instructional Leaders with strategies that academic leaders can employ to inculcate the values and approaches discussed in this volume in their departments and colleges.

As a therapist for over forty years, in the field of substance abuse/addiction treatment, I have met many remarkable people and have been privileged to assist them in their journey of recovery. Over the years, I have gained an assortment of insights, tips, and practical advice, shared by my clients, that many have found useful in their own recovery. I have come to call this knowledge “Collective Wisdom.” Together with twelve cognitive-behavioral themes, this information provides an effective framework for establishing long lasting sobriety.

“It introduced me to one of the most promising recovery approaches I have known in the 45 years I have devoted to the substance abuse field. Case after case cited in detail will give hope to those persons needing help. These cases will also stimulate professionals to consider the use of the Paradigm Developmental Model of Treatment (PDMT), described in the book, as an addition to any treatment in use or as a total recovery paradigm change.” Frances L. Brisbane Ph.D., MSW, Professor, School of Social Welfare (Former Dean, School of Social Welfare) Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, New York

“Paradigm Change-the Collective Wisdom of Recovery is truly a one-stop shop for a lifetime of recovery treatment wisdom.”  Carole, Los Angeles (19 years sober)

In wilderness we are capable of moving beyond what we are accustomed to seeing, thinking, and doing into new territory of the landscape and the mind.”
