Passport to the World
Learning to Communicate in a Foreign Language

Edited By Betty Lou Leaver, Inna Dubinsky, and Melina Champine

The underlying premise of this book is that all students can learn foreign languages. Foreign language study is a natural, human activity. As students grow older, however, they tend to lose the intuitive skills for language learning that they had as young children. This book seeks to transform these lost intuitive skills into overt knowledge, accessible to students for direct application in their class work and homework, whether that be as a high school student, university student, or adult learner.

New Visions in Foreign and Second Language Education

Edited By Gerd Bräuer, Karen Sanders

Do you want to get involved in reforming foreign and second language education?

What does it takes to foster the quality of language learning? What would be your role as a student, teacher, or administrator in such a change? How much modification of your understanding about the professional field is needed in order to ensure your success as a learner and/or educator?

In light of the New Visions in Action initiative, teachers, researchers, administrators, and policy makers from North America and Europe discuss ways of connecting (trans-)national reform and individual classroom practice. Through their work, they demonstrate the many advantages of international collaboration for reaching national agendas and personal goals at the same time.

Since the specific approach of this publication calls for an active reader, you will take the first step toward personal involvement in redefining how we teach and learn languages by picking up this book.

The Giving Gaze: La mirada pródiga
An Intimate Topography of the Border: Una topografía íntima de la frontera

By José-Rodolfo Jacobo, Manlio César Correa, Mario Martín Flores
Translations: Gustavo Segade, Sergio Waisman

Independently, but more so collaboratively, the poems and photographs in the book help us to better understand and appreciate life along this long and complicated US-Mexico border. In terms of both content and quality, both the poems by Mario Martín Flores and photographs by Manlio César Correa and José-Rodolfo Jacobo could easily stand alone but it is the combination, the intricate weaving of photographs and words, provides the reader with powerful, moving imagery of life as it is, not as depicted by Hollywood or in the distorted images of marketing firms, but through the photographs of real people and images of everyday life. Undoubtedly, readers will find themselves moving back and forth between the photographs and the poems because the words in the poems force us to refocus on the photographs and vice versa.

Shush and say "Six"!
An Innovative Introduction to Reading Hebrew, for Learners of all Ability Levels

By Zev bar-Lev

Is there any hope of really learning Hebrew in the short time of a regular course? After all, many people study Spanish for yeas and never acquire any truly usable abilities. How can one acquire usable abilities in a far more exotic language, with a wholly different writing system? The answer here is: yes, with the help of modern memory techniques.

Because of these techniques, Shush… is especially helpful for special-needs and phobic learners; it is built to address different learning styles, and helps ordinary students learn to use Hebrew more effectively.
